The Cigarette

I am the cigarette your lips envelope,

the nicotine that runs through your bloodstream.

I am the habit you know you should quit,

but I’m your one and only addiction.

I am the smoke that fills your lungs

and kisses your exposed skin.

My cancer will eat away at your beautiful body,

adding lines to your face

while slowly sucking your breath.

I am the leading cause of preventable death,

and still, you take another hit.

I will always be here for you,

until death we meet again.
